Water and Children; What Every Parent Needs to Know Children, especially babies, are very susceptible to sickness. A baby’s immune system is still developing and growing stronger every day, but until it fully develops parents have to be very careful. During this time, babies can easily become sick from germs and bacteria in your water. One hazard in water is heavy metals. For adults, severe effects include cancer, organ damage, damage to the central nervous system, and arthritis to name a few. Think about the immune system of an adult, it’s much stronger than that of a sensitive baby. Babies are much more prone to the toxic effects of heavy metals in water. Children and babies can have all of the above effects, but because exposure happens when the immune system and body is still developing, exposure to contaminated water can cause other effects such as: learning difficulties, memory impairment, damage to the nervous system, and behavioral problems such as aggressiveness and hyperactivity, and even brain damage. Besides heavy metals, unfiltered water contains many harmful chemicals. One chemical found in unfiltered water is chlorine. Chlorine is in all tap water and it is added to kill some bacteria in the water. Chlorine is dangerous to adults and causes cancer with repeated exposure. This chemical is even more dangerous for babies and small children. Mothers should especially be wary of unfiltered, contaminated water if they are breastfeeding their babies. Most small babies do not drink water but do not think they are safe! Anything and everything a mother eats or drinks effects the quality of their breast milk. Mothers should be very cautious about bottled water also. Many mothers take great care to eat and drink healthy while breast feeding to keep their babies healthy and safe. Mothers who drink bottled water should know that most bottled water is exactly the same as common tap water and may contain the same toxic metals, chemicals and bacteria. Breastfeeding and drinking water are not the only ways babies and children can be affected by unsafe water. At night parents give their beautiful babies a relaxing warm bath with the safest shampoos and soaps and gently wash them with the utmost care. Shampoos and soaps have warning labels so parents know they are safe for their babies. There is no warning label on your water! Chemicals and bacteria can enter your babies’ body by absorbing into the skin during a bath. When breathing in steam from warm water, your baby will also breathe in any vaporized chemicals. Don’t worry! It is very easy to prevent damage to you, and your children from water contamination. Your whole house can have pure, clean, filtered water when ever you want it to. Home filters are easily installed and can be hooked up all household sinks, baths, and showers. A home water filter will remove all harmful toxins and leave only pure, clean water for you and your family to enjoy! By: JENNIFER KARKOSKA
